12 Ways to Get New Customers:
Don Campbell – Expand2Web
1) Free Sites/Services – Build a practice site. Build a free site for a prospect or friend.
This gives you practice,(practice = confidence) plus something to show!
Also a source of referrals…
DOESN’T even have to be a real customer! Just make up a fictitious company website! Especially if you specialize on an industry… (e.g. Chiropractors…)
For many of our customers, the first site they build is their own site. Do you have yours set up yet?
2) Advertise Locally (…and without spending)
Craigslist lets you post free advertisement under “Services” and/or “Jobs”
There are many other local listing sites than Craigslist… e.g. many of them are free.
The more niche specific your offering, the better (e.g. Websites for contractors…)
Don’t spend too much on Google Adwords. It is too competitive to succeed with a small budget.
3) Blog – have a blog.
More traffic means more clients!
It’s hard to get started, and it takes time. We KNOW that.
Tips for getting started with a blog:
Plan your first 10 posts. Keep them simple. “How To” posts are always a hit.
What did you struggle with as you got started? Write it as “How to”.
Talk from your own unique perspective and experience…
Our blog is primarily a source of new customers… (NOT advertising)
4) Guest Blog
You will reach sites with a much larger reader base.
You will establish “Street Credits”.
Not just limited to Web blogs. Write for local Newspaper or Magazines.
Consider picking a niche to specialize in.
Focus your efforts initially. Understand a certain market.
Example: We started with Chiropractors which led to the Chiro Theme which morphed into the SmallBiz Theme
Offer not just “Building Websites” – you may have other sell-able skills
Examples: Copywriting, Graphic Design, SEO, Marketing, Print Design.
But make sure to offer very clear, specific packages (e.g. printed brochures or flyers, video, …)
7) Chamber of Commerce, Library, BNI
Attend local meetings to meet Business owners.
It will help you understand their needs.
The more often you give your talk, the better your pitch becomes!
8) Talk to the professionals that help you!
Talk to your Dentist, Chiropractor, Florist, Hair Stylist, etc…
Don talked to his Dentist, which led to paid talk for Dentist Group.
9) Think Local
Visit local businesses who are floundering with their online efforts.
Offer advice – initially for free.
Become their trusted advisor.
Very likely they will hire you for future work.
10) Educate Locally
Many professionals require continuing education credits.
Opportunity for you to be a presenter/speaker.
11) Follow up Existing Customers
New customers are 6x more expensive to get than existing ones.
Check in on them, ask them for referrals.
Talk to them about additional services (e.g. Mobile, Facebook, other specialties you may have, etc.)
12) Give before you Get – Marketing by Sharing!
Don’t get discouraged. It’s not personal!
Become a trusted advisor – show you understand their business.
People in your age/demographic/interest/past work niche – people tend to trust people like them.
